**Edit** - There are complaints that the phone is a Sprint LGLS998, apparently because the box lists it as such. However, the actual phone model is found on the phone under : Settings - General - About phone - Hardware info. The model number is LG-US998 on mine, and should be the same on others. The phone description is the only one that counts and the LG-US998 is the factory unlocked version and warranted for up to two years by LG. It seems that most 1 star reviewers returning the phone are doing so mistakenly, and missing a great value while wrongfully badmouthing the seller.I was annoyed, to put it mildly, that apparently LG has no plans to update these unlocked phones. The update to Android 8.0 Oreo has already been done for phones purchased through and locked to carriers. However, the software, both update and installation, is available online and the phone(s) can be updated manually instead of over the air. I was reluctant to do this at first, but once I assembled the software the installation was very easy and quick. I am now running Oreo 8.0 with the latest September 2018 security update. Upon boot up the screen reads "LG V30 ThinQ", which designates the use of artificial intelligence in the software. This is primarily an update to the camera operation. See the comments below to find instructions to upgrade the phone to Oreo 8.0 with a September 1998 security update. The five stars are obviously not for LG's failure to update this model, but nevertheless for the excellent characteristics and value of the phone. I like phones that are full featured, and that is becoming more difficult to find. There is a trend to drop the headphone jack, which is not to my liking. Most phones, it seems, have not activated the built-in FM tuner. This is a poor decision. If power is down (along with WiFi) or the cell signal is lost during a storm or emergency, having a self powered radio is vital. Also, listening to high quality stereo FM programming without having to use data or carrier subscriptions is obviously a plus. Even though this phone comes loaded with 128 GB of memory, I prefer to have the option to install a micro SD card. The LG V30 fulfills most all capabilities, with the exception of a replaceable battery. On the other hand, the phone now has IP68 dust and water resistance, making it impervious to rain and short term accidental dunks. This is a decent tradeoff. The audio qualities of the included earbuds are mostly marketing hype. Due to their small size, earbuds never sound as good as headphones. It's a matter of physics. Those who are lucky enough to have ears which are a good fit for earbuds may get better results, as the earbuds must be sealed in the ear canal with no gaps for best results. I put the earbuds back in the box. If you want to experience the excellent sound quality of this phone, use a good pair of headphones. Some complain that there is only one external speaker, and miss stereo speakers. As a long time music lover, this seems a joke to me that someone expects quality "stereo" from these tiny speakers. The dual speakers on phones are too close together and restricted in power and frequency response to provide any significant audio experience. The best you can hope for with tiny speakers is clarity and enough power to be functional. The operation of the phone is commendable. It is not loaded with locked carrier spamware, and it is very easy to customize to your liking through the many options available. The OLED screen is beautiful, and the most striking thing about the phone. The phone is very smooth, fast, and ergonomically adept. I like the way the fingerprint scanner on the back doubles as an on-off switch. The positioning of the controls makes it easy to use, and the software tweaking choices are admirable.I am not a fan of the ubiquitous glass everywhere phones. The marketing hype says "Fingerprint resistant glass back". Ha! Fingerprint resistant, my *** . Rather, it's really a smudge and fingerprint cornucopia."Glass breaks easily, so let's cover the back with glass as well". I can imagine this conversation coming up in a sales & marketing meeting. It's also slippery, and easy to mishandle and drop. These phones are delicate and expensive electronic jewelry, full of glitz and glamor at the expense of robustness and safety from mishaps. Unless you enjoy replacing phones, get a case for a little insurance. I like the wallet style cases, which cover the pretty glass back, but give reasonable protection to the front and back.Unlike another poster, I had no trouble at all in registering the phone with LG for the extended warranty. Unlocked phones use a 14 digit IMEI number. When registering either use the number from the box or delete the last number (in Settings - General - About Phone - Status) from the 15 digit IMEI on the phone. I received two email confirmations, one that a review was in process to ensure compatibility with the extended two year warranty, and a second shortly thereafter that the extended warranty was approved, with a registration ID number. All in all, with all of the excellent features, an outstanding price value, extended two year warranty, etc., it is easy to give this phone 5 stars.
