Only recently I bought my first open server/networking rack and started rack-mounting my gear. That means that a lot of my stuff isn't rack-mountable by default, but came in a "desktop" form-factor. So in order to put them into a rack, I needed rack shelfs to put them on.While lighter gear (such as mini PCs acting as a server) can go on a cheap 1U (1U = 1 rack unit = 1.75 inch height) rack and I bought a 4-point shelf for my really heavy UPS (>50lbs), I needed something to put my 8-bay NAS onto, which weights over 25 lbs with hard drives installed. 4-point shelfs are very expensive and also usually waste a full rack unit for the shelf itself, so I was looking for a sturdy 2-point shelf.I found this product and am not in the least disappointed with it. While it is more expensive than a 1U or 2U 2-point rack shelf, it can also carry more weight, because it is 3U high (and also make of thicker material). A 2-point rack shelf acts as a lever against the rack at the mounting points (which is both undesirable and unavoidable), The higher the front and side of the rack shelf, the better it can mitigate this, thus allowing for a higher weight. Since my NAS was about 3.5U high, there was also no space wasted in my rack, by buying a 3U shelf. While this product is more expensive, than some of the cheap 1U and 2U rack shelves on this platform, it has held up well and shown no problem that users have complained about for such cheap shelves, like bending. Granted this product is rated with a carrying capacity of 75 lbs, and with a current load of ca 25 lbs I have ample headroom, but I prefer to have that headroom (rather than buying a rack shelf with a carrying capacity of 30 lbs). This unit has downward-facing lips on the front and back of the shelf. However since this came as a single piece, you cannot rotate the bottom shelf to have those lips facing upward. All in all I am very happy with my purchase. If you have need for a 2-point rack shelf to carry heavier gear that is higher than 2U and are willing to accept the somewhat higher price tag, I can definitely recommend this product.
