The seal turns to dust, eats the motor shaft, and causes it to leak into the motor and destroy the bearing. This is why it gets loud and if you don't replace the seal it will happen to the new pump too. LG doesn't sell the seal but you can find an aftermarket one by searching 4036DD4002A (double check thats the one your dishwasher uses I have a LDF6920ST).
